Probably the best known example was the origin of Heathkit. Their first product was an oscilloscope that was sourced from war surplus parts. Eico also began in a similar manner. Early versions of the Eico 425 5" oscilloscope used unusual tubes with TWO top "caps" (often called "grid or plate caps"). Later versions of the same scope used more conventional tubes.
MANY of the pioneering engineers in the audio field received their electronics "education" via the Military and went on to "consumer audio" in the 1950's.
Advancements in wartime technology (Radar and Sonar, for example) were also instrumental in post-war developments in amplification and signal processing.
Advancements in vacuum tube technology were also accelerated by the war efforts. CRT technology was *certainly* advanced due to developments in radar and sonar displays.
After the war, many returning American servicemen took advantage of the "G. I. Bill" to study electronics and went on to become leaders in the "Home Hi-Fi Hobby."
We owe a HUGE debt of gratitude to the brave men and women who fought to preserve freedom throughout the world and then came home to turn that fledgling "hobby" into something that brings pleasure to MILLIONS of us on a daily basis. We can NEVER hope to repay them in full!
Bill
