...Technics SA-400 receiver with a Technics belt-drive turntable (vinyl was still the primary source for most people), JBL-L26 speakers, and a JVC cassette deck (which I quickly sold because vinyl was still king and simply sounded better). Great synergy and a fine system for mid-70's rock.
Tubes were considered obsolete by all but a very thin slice of audiophiles and old-timers. People threw away their tubed Heathkits, Dynacos, Scotts and Fishers as worthless; replacing them with modern transistor units. You could have bought ST-70's and WM-5's all day long for $10 each. Wall and console units like Scotts and Fishers were junked. 8 tracks were giving way to cassettes; although vinyl still ruled. Every drugstore and hardware store still had a tube center where you could test and buy tubes but they were disappearing quickly.
I was in college in the mid-70's. Blue-faced Marantz 22xx recievers were dominant in the dorms and at house parties, the Pioneer SX ran a close second, with Yamaha CR's and Technics SA's also prominent. My choice got down to the sound I preferred; the Technics with the JBL did it for me.
Speakers were still big and boxy. AR's, JBL's, Pioneer HPM's. Shortly after, you could buy these for a few dollars a pair at any garage sale as most went to smaller bookshelf speakers.
Today my main systems are tube-based with several vintage solid state receivers that I swap in and out for fun. Many of those vintage solid state units had massive transformers, were superbly constructed, and sounded excellent. They still do. And there's something about the glow of dial lights, heavy chrome and glass faceplates, and real wood veneer cabinets that pleases in addition to the music. That units like that can still be regularly acquired for $100 or less has got to be one of the most spectacular bargains in audio these days.
'Older folks' ... ahem! ; )
