The gasoline statistic you are referring to is the record high during the energy crisis in the 70's. Inflation adjusted prices may not have quite hit that yet, but every expert sees that the problems now are much more serious and deeply rooted. Ask the airlines to get out their inflation adjusted calculators and see what they say... Wheat, rice, corn have all more than doubled in recent months which is another really bad sign.
The rosy economic picture you paint could still fly a couple years ago even though it was being propped up for years before that. But not now.
And I think a major part of my post was pointing out the competition for discretionary income. Though my point was that laptops, internet, cell service (and x-box 360 as another poster pointed out) etc are all not necessarily considered "discretionary" by anyone under 30.
