I don't even have a CD player in my system...no need for it, you're right. The computer changes that.
I wasn't around then, so I can't say, but was the percentage of the population that was into high-end stereo really that much bigger 30 years ago, or was it just the fact that the gear readily available to the mainstream was better? I'd imagine "audiophiles" have always been a small minority, it's just the changing of technology has really accentuated those differences. When everybody was using the same kind of gear, it's harder to tell.
