Sounds like the friend with no TV or cell phone is a lot older than the younger "garbage" listeners today. That's a different audience than what the article was referring to. If you are under 30 a cell phone is necessity for 99.9% of the developed world.
I have two college age daughters and have gotten tons of great music from them in the last few years. And trust me, they can tell the difference when it's playing on my stereo. The biggest bone of contention is that we can't put her mac itunes library on my pc based Sonos network.
The stereo they want and what they will be able to afford in a few years will be two different things.
