People spend their disposable income on what is most important to them, and a decent stereo is not important to most young people today. I didn't have a great stereo when I was young either. I had the best I was willing to spend my money on - AR 4x speakers, Nikko integrated amp and tuner, Dual 502 turntable with inexpensive AT cartridge - all of which were purchased on sale or were demos. I spent most of my disposable income on alpine ski gear and lift tickets. Skiing was more important than a great stereo.
Nowadays, why spend lots of money on a stereo when you can buy a portable music device and a stereo docking station for way less. That leaves plenty of money for a big screen television, feature-filled cell phone, and a nice car.
