I think people have become less interested in music period. When I was growing up, there were two things on the radio, music and sports (I know, big metro areas had a new station). On AM there is no music, and FM more and more stations abandoning music at least for part of the day. When I moved away to college (early 70s) the one thing I knew I had to have for my dorm room was a stereo. Today, there might be an Ipod among the list of electronics.
When I visist friends, I almost never walk into a house where music is playing. that wasn't the way it was 30 or 40 years ago. I suspect the trend has accelerated over the last 10-15 years because of cable television and the internet.
People were interested in audiophile sound quality were always a minority, but, since music was a part of people's lives, at least some people could be convinced to upgrade.
I will be prejudiced and suggest that one of the reasons why music has become so much less important is the wuality of music generally available.
But, another factor is certainly the introduction of CDs - because people went from having 8-10 dollar records available readily to 14 dollar CDs available. People bought less music, therefore music became less important to them , therefore they bought still less music.
Add a creative slump in popular music in the early 90s (my prejudice, please no flames), and a desire by record companies to find the next "Thriller", and the result was a wasteland.
I was lucky because in the early 90s my interest in classical music really intensified, and I think one reason was that I couldn't find any popular music I cared for. It helped that I lived in LA, and had access to several outstanding sources of music (both CD and vinyl). I feasted on new classical. Others with different interests spent more time in other types of entertainment.
