The distance from the front wall (and the side walls) isn't as critical as some would make you believe. Having said that, the greater the distance the more 'air' around the music and vocals, which to me lends itself to a more realistic performance. I find that a sub is preferred. My 3.6R's now have a solid bass foundation down to the mid-20's. When set up properly, this system has a true 'wall of sound' that just sounds more realistic than mini-monitors or large box floorstanders (to a point)....but that is just to my ears....
