Hi Abe,
I opted for larger Maggie 3.6’s, but know the 1.6’s well.
Do they perform OK if you cannot place them a great distance from the wall behind the speakers?
They need more room to breathe than conventional speakers. Like all dipoles, generate sounds out the front and back of the speakers. The backwash coming off the front wall needs to be controled by either a) placing the speakers further into the room or away from the wall or b) placing the speakers closer to the wall and relying on acoustic treatments. I have mine about 4+ ft w/ a ficus tree acting as a diffusor behind them.
And would you generally integrate the Maggies with a subwoofer?
The bass has limited frequency range, but is well defined, articulate and sounds like real, un-amplified acoustic bass. They will “thumpâ€, but won’t “slam†or move air like a cone. My music taste runs the gamut and don’t feel the need for a sub even with rock tunes, but did feel the need to add a sub with the smaller models.
I've been told that these are the most incredible sounding speakers but they may lack bass response unless you can afford to get very large (expensive) models.
The 1.6’s are indeed an incredible speaker. Climbing further up the food chain yeilds better bass response, a ribbon tweeter, etc. but are more demanding upon application. While they can be driven by smaller amps, something magical happens when they’re “lit up†via a refined, “can they MAKE these any heavier†monster amp.
In a nutshell, maggies are a PITA to get right, but I’ve yet to come across anything that can create the “in the room†illusion better. When I close my eyes and relax, the room disappears and often can almost feel the artists in the room with me. I think Diana Krall spit on me, the last time I was listening to live in paris!
