I positioned my 3a's about 4 feet from a rear wall, and they sounded good. More distance is probably better, sure.
"And would you generally integrate the Maggies with a subwoofer? I've been told that these are the most incredible sounding speakers but they may lack bass response unless you can afford to get very large (expensive) models."
At least some Magnepan speakers blend very well with a good subwoofer. I have used a Muse model 18 subwoofer with my Magnepan 3a's, and the blend was seamless. I honestly could not discern where the Maggies left off and the sub took over. The 3a's go down to 37 Hz or something close to that, while my Muse sub covers frequencies from 50 Hz down to 18 Hz.
I'm not sure how sibling Magnepan speakers like the 1.6 would pair off with a good sub. Yes I've heard the 1.6 and thought it was bass shy. I'd bet, though, that it'd blend well too with a better quality subwoofer.
