My theory - dynamics

I have an old CJ PV1 preamp (later upgraded to PV2a status) that embodies all the classic characteristics, both good and bad, of older tubed gear. I noticed that when an individual instrument hits a dynamic peak, that instrument's image tended to 'pop' a bit, to momentarily expand and move forward. Before I had CJ rebuild the power supply a few years ago, this effect was rather exaggerated and even comical - think of a cartoon character's eyes popping out when surprised. Since the rebuild and a re-tubing, the image is far more stable, but this experience leads me to think that how dynamic peaks are rendered somehow has an effect on perceived image size.
