The big Allisons (probably the small ones, too) are pretty inefficient, so they benefit from some oomph... better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.I am using a Yamaha CR-2020 with my dump-find Allison Ones and the combination is eminently satisfactory. So satisfactory I've been listening more to the solid state stuff than my beloved EICO HF-81 and Cornwalls.
Hard to beat the vintage Yamaha for sound quality per dollar. hk of the same era is pretty nice, too, but the best hk of the era were low powered, albeit of very high performance and audio quality.
The Allisons are excellent IMNSHO and deserving of high quality electronics to drive them.
all the best,
mrh
