Goodtag Frihed89,I think I've seen tothe full range of service costs here in Los Angeles. The service rate fro tube gear has ranged between $10 hour to $200 per hour.
A yar ago, I had a fellow go through and test values on key components in my Eico 666 tube tester- he spent two hours and replaced two capacitors for $30, so the labour must have equalled about $10 per hour. Nice fellow, I had bought some NOS tubes from him off Ebay and he threw in a nice old Telefunken 12AT7, a couple Mullard 6AU6s, and a couple of good used RCA "cleartop" 12AU7s. I will work with him again!
On the other hand, I took my Audio Research amplifier to a shop in Santa Monica- George Meyer TV and Audio- and they said the new power switch was a $70 part and the installation would be $275, or a total of $325 for a small rocker switch ! By the way, the amplifier- (new $2000) cost me $520 so a new George Meyer switch at $325 equals 65% of the purchase price of the amplifier! I spoke to Audio Research and their charge for this work would be $20 for the part and about $60-70 for labour and that makes the labour at ARC about $60 per hour.
The to other shop I use in Los Angeles charges $90 hour. The work is excellent, and even close to the timing the shop quotes, and those are the important features, but repairs have all seemed to be costly there- ther seems to be "thinking" time rather than soldering time added.
Honestly, anyone that do anything with their hands in the US is becoming a prima donna !
"Hey, I just saw an amazing car accident- a plumber ran into an electrician!"
"What's so amazing about that?"
"How often to you see a Bentley hit an Aston-Martin?"
Cheers,
Bambi B
