Re: Who in their right mind would buy a USED TUBE amp?

Are you suggesting that tube amps don't supply enough guts? I would have to say that this is not necessarily the case. If you are not saying this then never mind.
If you are saying this then let me provide this case in point: I was driving my Apogees the other night to a quite satisfactory 90db on peaks with a pair of Cary CAD572se monos. These amps put out about 20 watts into 8ohms. My Apogees are 3 ohms (nearly flat impedance) so the real usable power is probably more around 8-10 watts. Guess what? It sounds fantastic with tight and powerful bass, a beautiful tone, and plenty of dynamic punch. There was no obvious sign of distress from the amp. Now conventional wisdom says there is no way this should work, right? Well, conventional wisdom is wrong in this case. I haven't actually had the guts to see how much further I can push it until audible clipping but I bet I can get at least 3 more db out of it. This would cover all but my loudest listening, which rarely goes beyond a few minutes.
I would also say that a tube amp from a repair standpoint is actually a much SAFER risk. If tubes fail (and they ocassionally do) they are very easy to replace. If something blows, they are typically very simple circuits that are not difficult to work on and find the bad part (audio research is an exception here as they ARE complicated). Try that with the typical transistor amp. If it blows you are pretty screwed unless you are an expert (or know one). Send it back to the company is about all you can do. So I would put ease of repair firmly in the tube camp.
From a family safety standpoint I guess tubes lose. My amps get VERY hot and are exposed. Definitely a no children zone.
