Like you I am thinking about tubes. I was thinking of going for the power amp first and then working my way to more efficient speakers. Since you are handy with a soldering iron, then I would definately go for a kit of some kind. Those seem to be the best value. Getting tubes is harder than finding light bulbs, but you can still find vinyl and if you live in a small town, there is probably an old TV repair shop with some gray haired fellow who still has a stash of tubes. But there a lot of places that sell tubes on the net. As others have said, go forth to tube asylum and may the glow be with you ;-).
