I just know I'm going to regret this post... but... uhm... help?

As I sit at my asbestos flame proof keyboard and type this... I am wondering if I should take the plunge into tubes. Am I old enough, refined in my tastes (and ear) enough to enjoy tubes? I can almost guarantee my bank account isn't ready for this kind of sound. I'd sell my sister for a tube pre-amp, and a 35 to 50 watt tube power amp. I'm looking at only the amps, a cd player and two speakers in this system. I'm quite skilled with a soldering iron, should I order a kit from these bottlehead.com nuts and roll my own? Can anyone suggest something affordable for my first foray into tubes? I'm guessing used gear is my only hope. Also, what kind of speakers will pass on the tube love? I have Paradigm Monitor 9 loudspeakers now, anyone have any input? I'm a Canadian, so any of you yankees should take into account the horrible exchange rates. I'm looking to keep this under $3K cdn funds. Is this a realistic price range? Lastly, what about replacing tubes? I assume they aren't to be found with the light bulbs at the local hardware store.
