not to take exception to your general premise but I would like to point out that I would gladly take 2% 2nd harmonic distortion from a SET rather than even 0.1% 9th harmonic from a high feedback amp (tube or transistor). The reason is simple, your ear masks the 2nd harmonic and not the 9th. This means to your ear/brain the amp with only 2% 2nd order distortion would essentially be inaudible distortion and would likely sound very good, the same cannot be said the other way around (all else being equal of course, which it is often not).
