I hate to be in position of defending Bose. It's just that in my real-life identify as a cost accountant I feel that I have to mention that the cost for equipment, tooling (molds) to make those tricky little plastic speaker enclosures can be DAMN EXPENSIVE! To make that kind of investment you have to plan to sell tens if not hundreds of thousands of units to make your investment back. If there is any R&D going into the developing the shape of these itty-bitty boxes that just adds to the up-front cost. I've no idea whether the wierd shapes Bose uses have sonic benefits, but unles the patterns were just thrown down at random, we are dealing with some major cash.Bose is kind of locked into their position. They have invested in largescale manufacturing and marketing. If, at this point, they tried to move into lower volume, more labor intensive products they would be risking a financial catastrophe. This has little to do with audio but a lot to do with coroprate strategy. Even if they have the knowledge and expertise to make audiophile products, they probably could not make the switchover successfully.
