I wouldn't spend a dime on Bose. (I did once upon a time but eventually learned better.) Nonetheless, I'm loath to be a busybody. For instance, when a co-worker told me about the great bass response of his Bose HT system I just smiled and asked if he has rented "Jurassic Park" yet. Most likely you are a humanitarian who wants to protect his neighbor from the charlatans and montebanks that emarge from the dark regions. Me, I just shrug and go about my business with the fleeting thought that fools and their money are, indeed, soon parted.I must add two faint praises for Bose:
1) When the 901 first appeared, most speakers of the day produced a sound stage that was like listening trough two portholes. The 901, set up and configured as directed by the factory was a first (albiet faltering) step on the road to more imersive listening experience. It should be considered in that historical perspective but be recognized as more than a little old-fashioned.
2) The second praise is not for the speakers but the "Lifestyle" receiver/CDP units. From a visual and human-factors viewpoint they are a step up from either the typical executive/shelf system or from the ubiquitous black boxes one finds lining the shelves at BestBuy. Price aside (which may be begging the point!), when conneced to a decent quality amp and speakers they compare well sonicly with some of the better mid-fi products.
