My father and his wife recently purchase a Bose home theater system. They are extremely happy with their purchase - and I think this is really the bottom line. It's not really much different than many of the inmates here who have purchased equipment that I have owned and thought sucked - but they make claims that they are in heaven and boast about the quality of musical reproduction they get for the dollar. Everyone likes to pick on Bose, I suspect it's because they are on the bottom of the heap, and it's easy for experienced listeners to hear how bad it is, but that type of marketing strategy exists throughout the hifi equipment hierachy in various forms. Bose wouldn't exist if there wasn't a market for what they are selling, absolute quality means little to those who purchase their products, just like absolute quality has little to do with the purchases made by audiophiles - it really is all about marketing and Bose marketing techniques are the norm within the industry not some special exception.
Give me rhythm or give me death!
