As a jazz musician and electrical ignoramus (let alone physics), I enjoyed reading the barbs you weird-ass science oriented guys flung at each other. But guys, I think you've been in the lab too long. What I wanna know is: what in the hell was the thought process which caused McGowan or someone else to try placing a cd between folded aluminum foil before playing? Ever think it might be more important to concentrate on the musical content than whether the horns and bassoons were set up in a line? Think Stravinsky would give a damn? Think he heard Rite of Spring in STEREO in his head with the bassoons and horns forming a line as he was writing it? Yes, I know that reproducing nuance enhances the listening experience, but perceived space, hall reverb and chair sqeaks is not what makes musical magic.
How the hell can you lose yourself in the astounding beauty of Rite of Spring if you are concentrating on things like that? I know who you are, and I respect your knowledge and talent. But unfortunately, a lot of hi-fi equipment sounds like the designers were more interested in hearing exactly where the 2nd clarinet player was when he dropped his reed case than on the totality of the music.
