Well, I'm sure going to try the foil...and error count trial.

I mean, it'll take 10s or so. Static sure isn't a problem around here this time of year, so it may be tough to tell if it's doing something, might be better observed in the winter (?). I have the foil piece already beside my CDP so I won't forget, but I was fooling with something else tonight:

I did try to detect the errors from my CS8427 receiver chip this evening...no dice. I introduced blatant errors that are sonically present. In this circumstance, the receiver is controlled by a microcontroller. CS8427 read error output indication can be enabled/disabled via a register, one bit for each type of error. I think DISABLED is the default condition for that chip (i.e. 0 in bit mask), so the manufacturer in effect didn't ENABLE output of error detection. I guess they had no reason to, since most normal people don't want to know this (probably best if they don't too...), and the manufacturer had no use for it in their design. Too bad. Since most people have the Crystal chips not under micro control, I don't know what the default condition is for sure, but it sounds from the data sheet the error output would be likewise disabled. I can check this later in a different DAC with CS8412, but that's how it seems. This is quite disappointing, I was kinda looking forward to some experiments...
