about 25-30hz to about 10khz, with level differences between ears. My left ear is less sensitive than my right ear. A result of having a shotgun discharged abt 10ft behind my left ear along time ago.
I have thought about this, initially when trying to determine if we could hear a difference between red book digital and analogue (IMHO Yes; you may disagree). Short answer is that our hearing is a mechanical-electrical process. Sounds excite the moving parts of our ears, which in turn generate electrical impulses sent to our auditory cortex for interpretation. ALL sounds excite the mechanical portion of our hearing, but our brain only interprets content from 20hz-to 20khz (at best) as "sound". Infrasonic, or ultrasonic content still excites our ears, but is consciously interpreted as something other than "sound". We are aware, but mostly on a subconscious level. The content can add or subtract from what we "hear" and in extreme case make us very uncomfortable.
Lots to think about to answer this question.
