"Can you do better than a pair of big Sound Labs electrostats?"

Yes, and for much less money. The Sanders 10Es are as good as it gets in electrostats/planar speakers. And you aren't likely going to do any better than the Kii 3/BXT combo if you want cone speakers. That's the thing about this so called "ultra high end" It's way beyond the point of diminishing returns. These uber expensive components are largely not offering better performance and in many cases not even as good performance as the components that are designed with science based engineering and no bull shit. What you get is bragging rights for how much your system costs and in many cases some really nice looking gear.

It's pretty much the same story for every kind of component. The most expensive components rarely give you state of the art performance much less diminishing returns.

Some people literally spend more on power cords that do nothing to the sound quality of a system than the money it would take to buy a state of the art 2 channel system.
