Its a rainy morning, and I am avoiding doing some writing by listening to a few tunes.
Pulled out Black Sabbath Paraniod. This is a run of the mill disc, not a remaster, or any other limited edition product.
Have a JVC XL-Z1050TN CDP feeding an Audio Magic Kukama DAC. Pre-amp is a Jeff Rowland Consanance, and power is provided by a Jeff Rowland Model 5 ampliifer. A pair of VMPS 626JR speakers sit on top of some Target HS series stands.
Fire the dsic up, and am quite impressed with what I hear. Ozzy is out front where he belongs, Toni Iommi and Geezer Butler flank him, slightly behind the crazy man. Bill Ward is hammering the skins, and the drum set it kept together, not spread across the back of the soundstage.
Weir thing though, on Hand of Doom, Butler and Iommi are swapped, and on different sides of the stage. On War Pigs they were in different locations. Oh well.
For the fun of it I drug out Nativity in Black, which is a Sabbath tribute disc. Cued up 10,000 Homo DJ's, which is a project of Al Jourgensen of Ministry. It's a cool reworking of Supernaut, but its flat as a board. No soundstage depth, everything smeared together. Great song, but its a wall of noise. Fired up a few other tracks, and to some degree they all suffered from the same issue.
Time to switch bands. Grabbed AC/DC Back in Black. Rock n Roll Aint Noise Pollution. Once again, nicely recorded. I can hear Brian Johnson light up a smoke, and take a long drag. Guitarists are where they belong, and the drum kit is tight.
In reality, heavy metal can sound good. It can be well recorded. And when it is, those albums are a hell of alot of fun.
