Early VCR's (virtually all metal parts) verses later models that used lightweight plastic parts come to mind- of course the tradeoff is size, price and weight.A lot of engineering is dedicated not to providing the best possible product, but rather to figure out how to cut corners and make the product as cheap as possible to produce.
In order to provide a product that features new technology, sometimes they are overbuilt to ensure reliability and to encourage adoption of that technology.
Of course, there are many exceptions to this...
