Thoughts on HE 2003

Top three rooms:
1. Wilson WP7 - Spectral (Music Lover's Audio). Dynamic, engaging, stunning soundstage. I saw a number of people around me grinnin and groovin. A real winner.

2. Karma Midi Grand - Tenor Hybrids. Phenomenally balanced. Breathtaking dynamics and imaging. Blew away the smaller Karma - Tenor room

3. Wilson MAXX - VTL Sigfried. Really overwhelming. Dynamics, speed. One got the sense of endless reserves of power. I probably would have listed this room as number 1, but I couldn't see this system in my house. Just too much. (I'd love to visit, however)

Anybody else visit the Totem Room? I was stunned by the bass extension of the Hawk and Forest speakers. I don't know if I fully cared for the mid and treble. Seemed a bit forward/aggressive to my ear. Perhaps it was the TriVista CDP? (I think that's what was set up there?) I just could not believe how much bass came out of those little floorstanders!

Critiques:
I was not impressed with the Avantguard Trio - BAT room. As others have mentioned, the sound was huge, but not emotionally engaging. The new JP Lab Beryllium Grand Utopias were shamefully presented in a cavernous room. The Triangle Magellans were ok. I thought the violin was well reproduced, but the dynamic range and speed weren't there. The Lamm - Pipedreams room was disappointing. I think the room may have been too small? The sound was sweet and balanced, but somewhat ethereal, lacking muscle and dynamics. The Dynaudio Evidence - Musical Fidelity KWT demo was atrocious. Loud, forward. Bass was absent (must have been sitting at a node). I had to leave.

I didn't have a good seat for the Joseph Audo Pearl - Manley room. Sounded quite good from the back, but I think others with better seats had an amazing experience.

I was very impressed with the Faroudja DVD player. This was simply the closest to film I have ever seen coming from DVD.
