That approach

I am now thinking that if one could measure the signal being introduced to one end of an interconnect and then measure it as it left the interconnect, and if the signal was unchanged, one could then say that the interconnect was transparent because it had no measureable effect.

tells you nothing useful at all because the key is how the components connected at either end respond to the combined LCR metrics along with level of shielding.
