The light comes from the laser, silly. The laser light beam is reflected directly from the "lands" to the photodetector but not (rpt not) reflected from the "pits." That's what creates the binary stream. That's how CDs work. However, as I've already described, the laser beam is also scattered by the physical edges of the pits and lands and by the clear layer, Thus the entire inside of the transport is filled with both visible red light and invisible near infrared light. That's why the Green Pen around the outer edge of the CD improves the sound - it absorbs visible red scattered laser light traveling from where the laser reads the physical data to the outer edge of the CD.
