Specifically the CD (and Blu-ray) laser is a "quantum well" that employs quantum confinement in two dimensions, so when energized the quantum well produces a steady stream of photons of the desired wavelength in third direction. The data that is contained on the data spiral contains a series of lands and pits of various lengths. The "signal" (ON is reflected from lands to the photodetector whereas no signal (OFF) is returned from pits due to the clever use of light wave interference when the CD laser strikes the pit, the depth of which produces the interference at that wavelength. Then all the ON/OFF data is assembled into meaningful 1s and 0s according to a predetermined table of values.
