General audio topics that don't fit into specific categories.

RE: I didn't know that. I thought it was just to prevent deterioration. Interesting. (NT)

"Reflectivity is not (rpt not) a function of electrical resistance.reflectivity is a physical property of a metal surface, how much light is scattered, absorbed or reflected"

Right but it is related. I read "Principles Of Digital Audio". They put as related, but still like glass can reflect and conduction of electricity is not in its vocabulary. But then glass is a liquid. However to make a mirror they coat it with - a conductor.

So back to the principle of digital audio. A CD has Cyclic Redundancy Code checking, or whatever abbreviated CRCC. What that means is that minor read errors are restored PERFECTLY. There are checksums involved.

And what many don't realize is that the LASER in a player actually puts out a conical beam which uses more of the surface area of the bottom of the disk that could have scratches or dust. therefore the read is less affected, if at all.

They definitely put some thought into it.

Another thing people don't kow is tht a CD could easily be four discrete channels but nobody ever used it. No disks ad no players so forget it. I wonder if they somehow use that to further reduce errors the state of the art has advanced. However I didn't keep up on it much.

Why all this shit ? To make them small enough to fit through the space provided in cars o the radio which could be supplied with a CD player. They also had to accommodate a whole album.

Then with the advent of DVDs the game changed, they got better formats than CDs.

Still I think I prefer good reel to reel. I could buy my friend's Teac A3340S but what would I record ?
