=> Did you have this problem with mono recordings as well?...
yes. mono recordings too. "julie is her name" and "satch plays fats" are 2 mono recordings i often play. my "jihn" cd comes in a transparent base and "spf" sacd comes with a dark grey base. but i noticed that this dark grey base from sony has a different sonic character from other dark grey bases. these sony single-layer sacd dark grey bases are more "mellow" and tend to introduce some mid-bass emphasis, and grainy high frequency sounds. the clear transparent base of "jihn" can help to centralize imaging, and it makes my system sound more open, and brighter. other than imaging issues, different bases imparts different sonic signatures onto the optical discs as well...
=> And what effect does a red, blue, orange or other colored CD tray have upon your system?
the cd disc from "tower of songs" (tribute to leonard cohen) comes in a red base. it didn't knock the imaging off to the left like other bases, but the disc sound distanced and "diluted", and sound is also relatively "closed-in" like a dark grey base. i think the previous owner has cleaned the disc with some solution before sending it to me (i bought it from ebay) after treating the disc with antistatic material (using contact methods), it becomes difficult to judge, since the treatment would also have neutralized the effect from touching the red colour base. (that is a subject for a future post). i haven't tried other colours.
=> How about those MFSL pop-up trays? Mini LP CDs in cardboard sleeves? CDs in plastic or paper sleeves from boxed sets?
MFSL pop-up trays doesn't affect imaging, but it makes cd discs sound like regular dark grey bases.
single layer sacd bases (the dark grey ones) from sony do affect imaging, and it also makes the sacd discs sound like regular dark grey bases - closed in and bloated.
transparent hybrid sacd bases (supplied from sonopress, germany) from may labels do not affect imaging, but it tends to make the hybrid sacd discs sound closed in and bloated, though not to the same degree as single layer sacd bases (the dark grey ones) from sony.
