Coupla things, most satisfying spkrs obey the rule of 400 eg 20-20k, 40-10k, and mine are close to that and I wouldn't want much more treble tonal balance wise. Most direct radiator speakers roll-off slowly in the treble, otherwise they sound VERY bright in-room, mine are about 7-8db down by 20k. I may one day add a supertweeter, but not without deeper bass.
And I don't subscribe to the continuous tone paradigm anyway, when we listen we pay much more attention to asymmetries, to whit attacks and decays of notes, this requires good waveform behaviour so that attacks and decays are not damaged. Good clean diffraction behaviuour, phase, and quietness are all crucial.
It is possible to have spkrs with odd-order xovers, 1st 3rd or 5th, that aren't phase coherent, because the drivers aren't in phase acoustically at our ears, which is what matters.
I've only ever heard early maggies that came in a roll, and more recently the baby single ways, so I can't comment much. I should think that planars have great potential for getting this stuff right.
But, large multiway planars MAY need a fair listening distance to integrate.
