Dave, I am sure that Doug Sax was absolutely on the up and up! This is how we hi end professionals record. We use the MINIMUM possible, and no IC op amps, if possible. That is why Doug made such great recordings (he also likes and uses tubes as well).
Those you who are used to adding an extra inverting stage (it's easy with op amps), most probably never get the most out of a recording. But how would I know? I just developed the electronics for 2 Mobile Fidelity tape machines, the studio board electronics for Crystal Clear (direct disc) recording,, and the master tape recorder for Dave Wilson as well as his studio board electronics, among other projects.
