Polarity problems go back all the way to the beginning of electrical recordings. Obviously the old horn mechanical systems were always in correct polarity.
Problems really started occurring in the 50's when Ampex used the 3 pin positive and Sony the 2 pin positive standard on their balanced tape recorders.
If you hear absolute polarity (Thanks Clark for turning me onto this and destroying my life,) you'd be better off getting a blanced system where its easy to change the polarity at will.
Be happy, and don't learn the difference.Bill
