Wrong, there is a standard for audio pro applications, recording being a part of them.
It's AES26-2001, which is a revision of AES26-1995 (which was relaesed ...ten years ago!)
its abstract says:
"Abstract
This document standardizes the polarity of the signals at the various interface points between different items of
equipment, in particular from the acoustical, electrical, mechanical, digital, and magnetic aspects. Each item of
equipment complies separately with the polarity requirements for the input and output signals."
So, since 1995, recording with the wrong polarities is just a proof of poor job practices. Very common in audio, I know...
