Re: That old devil "Wood Effect"

Hi Mark,

You said:

"The fact is, polarity can be--and usually is--reversed many times along the way from the recording to your listening position. For example, it is typically reversed at least a couple of times in most power amps alone. Whether it comes out the same way it went in depends on the number of stages an amp has, and whether they are inverting or non-inverting."

I agree.

"And that's just amps. Throw in CD players, DACs, preamps, and whatnot--not to mention all the steps between the master and the finished CD--and basically you have a crap shoot as to whether polarity is preserved."

Absolutely!

"That means, there is no "correct" polarity for a system, there is only the correct polarity for this given recording."

We seem to be in complete agreement! :-)

"BTW, I understood perfectly what Ricker was saying. I was just responding specifically to the post."

Aaah, here's where we seem to differ.

Mike asked "How can I tell if the polarity of my system is correct? I have that Cardas test disc with "In polarity" and "Out of polarity" tracks but I don't know how they are supposed to sound."

You replied "There is no right polarity. The reason is that recordings come both ways. There is no standard."

I felt a more helpful response to his direct question about the Cardas test disc would've been to say something like "If your system is set up to deliver correct polarity (NB: this is a TEST disc so I think we can assume the LP contains the original-Stan-Ricker-recorded polarity) then:
* with the "In polarity" track you will hear ... this!
* and with the "Out of polarity" track you will here ... that!

I can't fill in "this" and "that" because I can't hear any difference between those two damn tracks!! I suspect this is because my 3-way Maggies have the mid-range panel inverted so I have "crossover miasma" phase problems! :-((

Regards,

Andy
