Look at jfz post immediately above about the road to really high-end goodies.
That's one of the two least understood aspects of DIY electronics, that, besides it not being as technically daunting as many believe, it has the built-in imperative to want to go from a Transendar, say, to a Magnequest transformer or similar capacitor or other component upgrades. Eventually, some will get to where they fool with topologies within the original circuit or even go off on their own.
Get a board, Tubelab Simple SE is a great start, and get to work. Even if it's not for you, at the finish you'll have a really nice amp that cost about $400 with basic parts.
