Well, I tried cheapo EQs (at least 3 of them - including a Behringer DEQ2496 which was not exactly cheapo) and:
1) They don't look nearly as nice as the McIntosh
2) They don't sound as nice/warm as the C34V
On top of that, the C34V gives me an extra phono - which leads me to the next answer:
> How are you doing with all those McIntoshes and Empires?

Doc, you have great memory :-)
I could not bring myself to sell the D.O. Thorens, so now it's sitting side by side with the Aries II (and I am listening to it right now) going through the C34V phono stage - and it sounds great.
I use the Thorens + AT440mla on those "less than perfect" records and recordings, and save the Aries2 + Clearaudio Maestro for the better recorded material and LPs that are in good shape. As I said, the best of both worlds for me. It's been a while since I felt the urge to do anything to my system in terms of upgrades, component swaps, etc.
One Empire (the 398) is designated for the office (with a Shure M97xe going into a Mac1700), the 698 is on a third system with a Bellari phono stage and a Bottlehead as a headphone amp for Sennheiser HD580.
I consider myself a very lucky guy to be able to have great music most of the day :-).
Ciao!
Alberto
