Well, it's not really too surprising, vibration control is VERY important in source gear, particularly if it's in the same room as your speakers. A lot of the build quality in the XA7ES is just vibration control, and the same is true in their new SACD speakers. Your isolation setup is absolutly a must for turntables, IMO. That's one reason the direct drives weren't too highly regarded in the late 70's- poor isolation in most cases. Spurious vibration is also a big problem in speakers- hence, the cabinets in my current ones are 1-1/2 to 2.25" thick, and heavily braced. Another aspect of vibration control is cone break up- typically a signicant loss in inner detail and naturalness in the midrange- one reason I use Eton drivers a lot in the mid, and selected Focal and Audax tweeters. A modest table with good vibration control will eat a cassette for lunch- in more ways than one! As you've found out. The reason a lot of my gear is heavily modd'd is because I'm an EE, in the analog area, and also do some outside consulting from my day job- it's easier to modify or rebuild a basic unit than to start from scratch on a one off basis. It's a combination of listening and measurement, plus of course the music itself that compells me (being a working musician for 10 years at one times is both a blessing and a curse). Happy listening.
