My first stereo was a birthday gift from my parents in the late 70's. It was a Soundesign compact stereo and it only took me a few months to realize that I could do much better. I saved up my lawn mowing money for an entire summer and bought a Lafayette (remember them?) Criterion Mk 1 receiver and a pair of Lafayette (forget the model) 3 way speakers. Now I was on my way. Over the next few years I added various Technics and Akai cassette decks and a Garrard (forget this model too) TT with an Audio Technica cart. I was sure this was unbeatable until I borrowed a friend's 60's vintage Sansui speakers, one of the models with the sculpted wood grilles, and they absolutely KILLED the Lafayettes (I ended up buying them) Now I had to upgrade everything. That's when the bug initially bit but the true awakening occured the first time I heard a tube amp (CJ Prem 1) driving Magnepan Tympani IVs. That's what led me down the long road to where I am today.I like my current system and I think it's the best sound I have ever had but I still think I had more fun with the old stuff. I guess I'm just not as easily satisfied anymore. Hmmmm..... Good thread, It's nice to remember the good old days when this was just for fun.
