For Christmas, when I was 13 or 14, I got a Fisher modular stereo... separate receiver, turntable and speakers... can't remember the sound... oh yeah... it had an 8track player in the receiver. When I was in College I bought my first stereo... NAD 3140 integrated amp, Luxman cassette deck, Infinity bookshelf speakers with clear poly woofer cones... and a B&O turntable... hey, I was on scholarship ;-)
Later I added a Yamaha CD player and the whole setup lasted for 12 years.
My reentry into stereo in the high end way started about three years ago... and I've been nuts ever since.
