Re: I'm curious, what was your first *true* stereo system? (long)

That's easy, it's in the Inmates System section!!! As far as a first *true* system is concerned, I'm on it right now, still building it I guess. For years I had a Pioneer receiver, cd changer, the changed to Yamaha gear (don't know why either, maybe it looked better!?!?) and some Kef C40's. Thought I was moving up in the world with my Infinity SM152's back in 1992? Took out my first loan to buy them! Those Infinitys made their way to a friends house a couple of years ago where they experienced some real power, a Bryston 4B NRB. WOW! That was the start of it all! There I was with this 250wpc amp on my speakers rated for 150watts. It was then I understood why it was better to have too much power than too little. I figured that's why the Yamaha 100/wpc integrated died on me, I must have overburdened it. You know it wasn't too long before I got a bad itching for a real amp so I got the Pioneer back from Pops as it had pre-amp outs, so I figured I get an amp, then a pre-amp. Having about $400 I set out on the net to find an Adcom 200/wpc and there it was....... A Bryston 4B NRB :) Come hell or high water I was going get that amp, even if it killed me so off to a different bank for another small loan (thanks Mom!). When the amp came in (10/98), that friend w/ the Bryston lent me the matching BP20 pre-amp to go with it as he had moved up to some Pass gear. Luckily he wasn't strapped for cash and was able hold on to this piece for me. Instead of selling off his old gear, he had wanted to see it make it's way to my house. An extended payment plan make it mine for good (Thanks Alan!) Oh no! No phonostage in the pre-amp!!! At this point, I was literally broke save for the change in the change jar, all $80 of it. A Parasound phonostage on the net for $80? How convenient! A few months later in Jan99 the used Rega P3 with Grado Gold cart for $500 seemed to good a deal to pass up, so goodbye Kenwood cheapo! Also got the Audioadvisor closeout catalog that month with MIT Terminators 2's for $48. "Even I could afford that." I thought to myself. Figured I'd be not to crazy to see what's the fuss about cables. $48 later and I'm totally amazed and quickly wondering what $250 cables sound like! Feb99 found a great deal on some MIT 20' balanced cables - same ones in my friends system, but were half the length (yup, he had 40 footers!), so how could I possibly go wrong??? Cha-ching! The reference system of my friends (a reference to me anyway) included 20+ yr old JBL L200's. Wanna guess what happened when I came across a pair of JBL L200B's this past October? Yup! That's about it. The Yamaha cd player is still in operation and digital doesn't excite me right now, especially with all that's going on in that department. Not bad for a years time if I do say so myself!

Considering the importance of the room, I'll mention my room is a detached garage turned dedicated listening room (thanks Dad!) The idea was to fix up this room to bunk in when it came time to renovate the rest of my tiny house. In the meantime, it would make for a nice listening room! Unfortunately, a flood 4 months ago forced a jump start in the renovation project, so here I am camping out in the audioroom, bed and all :( Actually, the renovation needed to get going anyway, so it's all just as well.
