I agree with everybody! I think this is one of those "system-dependent, taste-dependent, blah, blah, blah..." situations (like most everything else in audiophilicity) where it pretty much comes down to what YOU like. I started my re-entry into vacuum tubes with an ss pre and a SE tubed power amp based on feedback (no pun intended) from folks like Ron Wellbourne and Steve Deckert. However, I quickly added a vintage tube preamp to the system 'cause I wanted a tubed phonostage & I didn't want to spend too much. The tubed preamp definitely added "air" and "space" to the analog sound (i.e., vocals, especially female)... but it didn't sound BAD with the ss preamp, either!
My humble suggestion... if you're an experimentalist, like me, and/or you want to play (and learn), look at EBAY, or Audiogon, Audioshopper, or Audioweb and pick up a modest, full-function tubed preamp like an EICO HF-85 or Dyna PAS-2 or 3. You can get one for $100, or even less. I don't think you'll find a decent power amp for similar $$$.
Try it, you may like it.all the best,
mrh
