I just got back from a 3 day cruise. I took a Sony portable CD player (CD Walkman?) with me with the standard phones. The sound was wonderful - I couldn't believe how good it was. This unit was a gift a long time ago that I have never used (too many CD players in the house). When I got home I put my main system on to compare. Thankfully (AS I have spent thousands on my main system) the sound just washed over me as it has always done. THe portable CD was good, but, for me this was something else - the real musicality I crave.
The point? All sound is relative and subjective. I was lucky when it came to building my system that an audiophile friend knows and understands MY likes and dislikes in music reproduction. He gave me the standard piece of advice any good audiophile should - let your ears decide.
Now I have a system that is used 4 to 6 hours per day during working days and almost constantly during the weekend. My TV is history (I may even sell it). My surround sound has gone. I have what I want and music has never meant more to me.
You seem to love your surround sound setup. That's great. It is the reverse of my likes. Vive La Difference!
