Re: Musicality - what is it, and am I going mad? (longish)

"So I went through years of buying bits of kit in order to improve the sound and get it towards where I thought it should be; towards that memory I had of a demo years and years ago where I sat at the back of a crowded room and heard some acapella track as though the singers were in the room with me."

Peter,

I think we all go through this. I recently, all from e-bay, got a mint
Pilot 240 6BQ5 integrated amp, EICO (mono) HF 90 tuner and Pioneer 16 ohm Alnico speakers. All for less than $500 delivered and it sounds involving and musical. Our systems are but windows to the enjoyment of music. Too much 'transparency' allows ALL the flaws of a recording through. I want to be able to enjoy all my music, not just the stellar recordings. Software in general is the weak link and the 'best' gear will not make up for this. This is why we are in the Asylum. Hope this helps.

Les
