I don't think the music that is being judged, it's the playback system.
I think HP meant to use recordings of live unamplified music to judge your system after becoming familiar with live unamplified music, in person, to start with.
It was not meant as a knock against other forms of music. It's just that with most other forms of music we have no way of knowing what they sounded like at the time of the recording (unless you were in the studio at the time).
Or at least that is what I always thought Harry was getting at.
I do not consider it a perfect reference (live unamplified acoustic music) but I can't think of a better one for subjective listening evaluation of a playback system.
