When the Soundstream Telarc LPs were being released, to almost unanimous acclaim, nobody back then talked about digital audio in terms of insufficient bit resolutions, inadequate sampling rates, jitter, dither, etc. ... Nobody had heard of a lot of these terms, and nobody suspected that these issues would come forth..... The sonic fireworks these LPs brought forth was acclaimed as a sonic and technological breakthrough.
The successes of Telarc/Soundstream LPs may have been responsible for the recording industry transforming quickly to all digital releases during the 1980s..... A lot of us at the time expected the compact disc (CD) to reach new sonic heights, eclipsing those of the Telarc/Soundstream vinyl.... These sky-high expectations triggered a transformation that hit us like a tsunami..... After these CDs hit the market, vinyl was declared obsolete and the masses in most part bought into it. (It was a big deal at that time for audio gear to be deemed "digital ready.")
But these above mentioned technical terms in digitized audio surfaced as we came to the realization that most digitized recordings outside of the Soundstream world (especially after the CD first came out) didn't sound exactly right...... Not coming close to meeting those expectations..... We expected to experience digital recordings (both LP and CD) that were at least comparable to those Telarc/Soundstream LPs... But in reality, this never materialized.
And to this day, I personally do not know of one classical recording on digital disc (CD, SACD, DVDA) that I thought has equaled the sonic qualities of the best Telarc Soundstream LPs.![]()
