RE: Made in ___?

The Country of Origin regulations in most countries are similar to those of the US and Canada ... meaning that at least 51% (or some similar number greater than 50%, it does vary) of the value added in manufacturing must be from that nation.

So, two $50 speaker drivers from China and $20 worth of crossover components from China means that the cost to manufacture would have to be at least $241.xx and in the US at least $121.xx worth of that total cost would have to be within the US to claim "Made in USA" on the label.

If that metric cannot be met, you can say "Assembled in US from domestic and foreign components", but it would not meet the "Made in USA" requirements for Country Of Origin. The result of that would be, for example, the item would not qualify for Duty Free status under NAFTA if imported into Canada or Mexico.

If all the components were manufactured in one of either the US, Canada or Mexico then the manufacturer could claim NAFTA status (there's a declaration you can make) but would still only denote the nation of final assembly (very common with automobiles).

Note that this would only affect the classification by customs; electronics, software and audio equipment are all duty free imported into Canada regardless of the Country of Origin. I don't know how Mexico would treat consumer electronics.

Similar rules would apply in the various Trade Agreement zones in the EU, Asia, etc.
