RE: No democracy

To be fair it isn't their government - it is the US companies that come in to get a lower rate. I understand being upset with a government keeping control the way they do but I think one should also be against greedy bastards who try to take advantage of that system for their own gain. Fire the US worker - close the shop - move to China - pay them nothing work them to death and sell the goods back to Americans at the same price it always was or more because they need to make $2billion for their personal bank accounts.

The Chinese worker may only get a few bucks a day but those few bucks are still more than zero.

So while I get people want to buy America - it is better to be poor in the west than to be poor in China and the poor Chinese worker needs the job and needs to eat as well. So it's a double edged sword - if you stop buying the Chinese product that worker starves to death. In Socialist countries if the worker loses his job there are a host of options and resources to help them and perhaps in the US as well.

China isn't really a dictatorship though.

From Harry He, Independent Chinese film maker

"China has an unique very complex meritocracy system with some democratic supervisions at work. At low level, anyone can pursuit a political career, and you better start young because it takes decades of work and there is an age limit at top level. There are difficult tests for beginners. From there up, more tests and peer evaluations from same level of governments takes place. Eventually, you can climb to the top through diligent work and good performance. However this is only the administrative part of the Chinese government.

Then there are two parallel supervision systems. First, we have a people's congress which itself has different levels to supervise equivalent administrative level. The lowest level of the congress is indeed democratically elected. In country sides, it is usually a village or a small town scale, one person one vote system. In cities, it is usually a district or an area scale. Our logic is that only at this small scale people can truly know the guy they are electing to best represent them. However, most Chinese are not interested in election at all, especially older generations before 80s, I believe the culture revolution left a huge scar on them.

They either sell their votes or let other relatives decide for them. The situation is getting better and better for more educated youth start to truly care. Each level of the congress elect people for the next higher level of congress, up to the National People's Congress which is the final one. It has supreme power over everything else in this country. It can make laws, change laws, change constitution, decide war, and decide the highest level of administrative officials based on the candidates the administrative meritocracy system provides, or remove them from place.

The biggest difference of our congress from a western one is its seats are not occupied based on political parties. This avoids political dramas between parties and results high efficiency of the congress. You do not have to be a communist party member to be in the congress or be an government official, but it will make everything a lot easier if you do.

It is also worth mentioning, although our congress does not have the power to overthrow the entire CCP and replace it with another party because it is written in our constitution that CCP must rule. However, technically, it can do so via changing the constitution itself. Which will probably never happen, not only because majority of the people in this entire system are CCP members themselves, but also we find using the congress power to change the CCP little by little or push it towards the direction people want is more convenient and much safer than overthrow it. And this is exactly what is happening now. A lot of people are arguing should the CCP still be called a communist party at all. But we Chinese like to play safe and be practical, so we leave it be.

BTW, we still call our top leader "chairman", "president" is only a translation to suit your western mind.

The other parallel system is called "Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference", this is mainly for any other political parties or non party people who probably have a different agenda or needs than the CCP. This conference does not hold true power. It is mainly a negotiation for policies. Effectively removes any threat to the dominance of CCP by peaceful means."

So unlike a true dictatorship there are at least SOME checks and balances to get rid of nut-job who becomes leader.
